Public Awareness Programme 2007

12th Ocean Park Conservation Day

The 12th Ocean Park Conservation Day was successfully held on 13 January 2007 with fun and full of green. All the guests enjoyed the photo exhibition, student game booth, as well as our afternoon ceremony. Ocean Park has generously donated their full day gate revenue of HK$1.4 million to the Foundation to support its conservation effort in the region.

Two events marked this year’s Conservation Day; Prize Presentation for "Healthy Coastal and Marine Life Digital Photography and Video Competition" in the morning, and the official Conservation Day ceremony in the afternoon.

Prize Presentation for "Healthy Coastal and Marine Life
Digital Photography and Video Competition"

Launched on the World Environment Day 5 June 2006, this competition was co-organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Hong Kong Underwater Association (HKUA) and Ocean Park to promote the beauty and diversity of coastal and marine environment and enhance public’s understanding and the importance of marine conservation.

The presentation ceremony was officiated by Dr. Wong Fook Yee, Assistant Director (Country and Marine Park) of AFCD, Mr. Alfred Au Cheuk Sun, Vice Chairman of HKUA, Mr. Tom Mehrmann, Chief Executive of Ocean Park. Close to 100 winners attended the ceremony and shared their love and passion on marine conservation.

Exhibition of the winning photos and videos was displayed throughout the day. You can also click here to take a look at some of the winning photos on AFCD’s website.

The event's officiating guests included Dr. Sarah Liao, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau and Mr. Jaycee Chan, Star of Conservation Day 2007. During the ceremony, Dr. Liao and Jaycee interacted with our sea lion ambassador Victory and six students to promote conservation messages. They also presented awards to the gold winners of "Hand-in-Hand, Conserve the Wildlife" Award Scheme 2005/2006.

We also launched the third year's "University Sponsorship Programme in Wildlife Conservation" during which twelve students from HKU and HKUST will join six of our funded field research projects in China, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka. You can read more about the programme and students’ web blog here.

The Foundation would also like to thank Ocean Park for donating over $7 million to us in 2006. Gratitude is also expressed to Dr. Allan Zeman and the many donors making a difference in wildlife conservation. Sponsor and donors of Conservation Day include :
