  >> "Sichuan Earthquake Relief - Giant Panda Base Rebuilding Fund"

In light of recent media reports about OPCFHK's role in research studies on marine mammals, we would like to assure the public that the Foundation was not and will not be involved in funding studies specifically to support Ocean Park's business purposes.

As an independent charitable trust, OPCFHK has in place a scientific advisory committee* comprised of 23 independent and respected scientists to review each project proposal before any funding commitment is made. Since inception, we have funded over 200 projects that support the conservation of endangered marine and terrestrial mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and other wildlife.

Over 100 local university students have also benefited from an ongoing Foundation program aimed at nurturing the next generation of conservationists by providing them with valuable fieldwork experience.

OPCFHK is committed to advocating, facilitating and participating in the conservation of biodiversity, with an emphasis on projects in Asia, through education and research.

Sustain our Efforts - Rebuild the Panda Nature Reserves

The 12 May 2008 earthquake severely damaged 49 panda nature reserves and destroyed 526km2 panda habitats. As damaging as it was to human families, the earthquake also destroyed panda breeding centres and reserve stations.

OPCFHK cares not only for the wild pandas but also for the people who cared for them, patrolled the reserves and supported the many conservation efforts. In the first year, OPCFHK sent relief and office equipment to help the reserve resume daily operation as well as vehicles and construction of a reserve station.

In the coming years, OPCFHK will continue to work with the Sichuan Forestry Department to support rebuilding, habitat restoration, capacity building for panda nature reserves and conservation research.

We need your support to sustain our efforts for the pandas and other wildlife sharing the habitats:
