Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong
Funding Applications: 2006-2007


Effective 1 July 2005, the Hong Kong Society for Panda Conservation (HKSPC) has merged with the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF) to become Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong (OPCFHK) . As the conservation arm of Ocean Park, the Foundation will advocate, facilitate and participate in the conservation of wildlife and habitats, with an emphasis on Asia, through research and education. Our vision is to ensure the sustainability of wildlife and biodiversity.

The Foundation is inviting funding applications for projects to commence in July 2006.

In general, three types of research will be funded.

  1. Survey, ecological and behavioural research on the cetaceans, giant pandas, birds, reptiles, amphibian and other wildlife of Asia, especially projects related to conservation, ecotourism, education and local training.
  2. Research on captive animals and any aspects of their behaviour and husbandry.
  3. Participation in and organization of education/conservation/ecotourism projects, workshops and conferences.

 

Notes
  • Focal species shall include, but not limit to the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin(Sousa chinensis), Finless Porpoises(Neophocaena phocaenoides), Baiji(Lipotes vexillifer), Irrawaddy Dolphin(Orcaella brevirostris), Dugong(Dugong dugon), Susu(Platanista gangetica gangetica), Bhulan(Platanista gangetica minor) and Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus/aduncus), Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)
  • Subject to the available funding, the Foundation intends to allocate
    HK$ 3.0 million to support scientific projects, with evenly sharing of fundings for projects in North, Central and South East Asia.
  • Funding scale is shown as follow:
    - 50 % Marine Mammal
    - 25 % Giant Panda
    - 7 % Contingency / Ad hoc project
    - 5 % Amphibian
    - 5 % Bird
    - 5 % Local stranding
    - 3 % Tsunami recovery
  • Projects must involve local national scientists and students.
  • Continuations to projects must involve local tertiary institutions or government departments.
  • A conservation management plan for the species and its habitat must be provided in the final report of the funded project.
  • For training and workshop attendance, any provided documentary materials must be included with the final report.
  • The Foundation reserves the right to use, quote and publish papers, photos and other materials generated by the funded projects.
  • A proforma application form is available at the Foundation website at www.opcf.org.hk.
  • All project applications will be vetted by groups of eminent local and overseas scientists.
