| Project title: |
Determining the Impact of
Bamboo Harvest on Bamboo Stand Recruitment and Physiological
Characteristics of Individual Ramets |
| Principal Investigator: |
Dr. Brian J. Rude |
| Project period: |
2006 - 2008 |
| Objective: |
Little to no information exists on the effect of harvest on shoot production, biochemistry, and giant panda utilization of bamboos, particularly with regard to giant panda herbivory or human harvest. However, Reid and Hu (1991) and Wang et al. (in prep.) observed that wild pandas avoid previously foraged sites. This behaviour could be the simple result of a decrease in available biomass following disturbance (Wang et al. in prep.). On the other hand, it could indicate alterations in plant physiology variables (fibre characteristics, silicification, carbohydrate or nutrient dynamics) and resulting cues for negative dietary selection. By developing a collaborative and, multidisciplinary study in captivity and the wild, this programme intends to measure the impact of harvest on bamboo physiology and ecology. |

Behavioural and Hormonal
Assessment of Stress and the Effects of Environmental
Enrichment in Captive Giant Pandas (Ailuropoda
melanoleuca) |
| Principal Investigator: |
Dr. Reimi Kinoshita |
| Project period: |
2002 - 2004 |
| Objectives: |
The two main goals of this
study are 1) to find out if pandas prefer to work for
food and how they interact with novel and familiar feeders,
and 2) evaluate the effect on these indicators by changes
in the environment via their monitoring. |
