Marine Life Stranding Response Team: Investigating the Health of Local Marine Wildlife
First-hand Investigations and Support
During 2019/20, the Team responded to 51 cetacean stranding cases in total, an alarming rise that includes an approximately two-fold increase in Chinese white dolphin stranding cases over the previous period, and a record high since its founding in 2006 in collaboration with AFCD. With the support of veterinary and marine animal husbandry experts from Ocean Park, the Team conducts necropsies and collects samples of these stranding cases. This is done to identify the cause of death, habitat and health of each victim so as to refine significant conservation measures. Generally, most cetacean stranding cases result in deaths primarily caused by human activities.

Here are three stranding cases from 2019/20, demonstrating how human activities could lead to a dolphin or porpoise’s death:
Stranding Case 1: Chinese White Dolphin Ingested an Entire Ghost Net
On 14 August 2019, a female adult Chinese white dolphin carcass was found at Pui O, Lantau Island. An abandoned fishing net occupied two-thirds of its stomach, which led to its death by starvation. This is a stark example of how marine debris, and “ghost nets” in particular, are death traps to marine animals.
