USSP – Bali Starling Project:
Spreading Conservation in the Local Community

With a population of less than 50 mature individuals, the Bali starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) is identified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its survival is in peril due to poaching and illegal pet trading. For two consecutive years, USSP students were offered the opportunity to experience and support research for this precious bird endemic to Bali, Indonesia.
USSP joined the researching team of the Begawan Foundation in 2019/20 and supported their environmental education programmes by holding activities for the local community. USSP students assisted in the daily operation of the community learning centre and helped organise workshops and lessons. A key part of their work also included documenting different conservation activities and producing a video themed “Impacts of Education Programme” to share the importance of raising public awareness.
Throughout this trip, the students learnt how tourism and pollution are serious threats to the local ecosystem. With this in mind, they recognised that educating tourists and the local community on reducing waste and minimising the use of disposable plastics are crucial to preserving the environment.
Education and observation are of the utmost importance. Through education, the public gains a better understanding of environmental issues. Close observation by the government also ensures the people are updated on current conservation efforts.
